When a tooth experiences advanced decay, trauma, or extensive dental work, it is possible for the nerves to die, cause an infection, and create extreme pain. A root canal is used to preserve the tooth by cleaning out the infected or dead nerves from the canals, then filling them with a rubber like material. Subsequently, the tooth is restored with a crown that replicates the look and feel of the original tooth.
